ABOUT MWFF
Under the vision of Nicole Elkins, former UFA President, and the direction of Katrina Young, the creation of a summer music festival for flute students in Grades 1-12 began in Utah! Held at the beautiful Waterford School of Performing Arts in Sandy, Utah, students participate in classes over four days that teach flutes skills, musicianship, and performance technique. Classes are taught by a variety of professional flutists and teachers in the Western United States as well as a featured Guest Artist.
MountainWest FluteFest celebrates all levels of musicianship and aims to help students learn and grow from where they are. Each student enrolled will be placed in classes according to age level and the grade they will be entering in the Fall of 2023, not by ability. MWFF offers the following tracks: Grades 1-3, Grades 4-6, Grades 7-9, and Grades 10-12.
Student Classes
Grades 4-12 students will have 5 classes per day
- 50 min Masterclass (semi-private lesson, 3-4 students per class)
- Every student should come prepared to play a polished solo piece for their masterclass teacher and student participants in this class. Every student will have a chance to play. Students should also bring the flute music part. Piece does not need to be memorized.
- 50 min Flute Technique Class
- Accelerate your flute playing with the skills and tools learned in this class. We will focus on learning efficient ways and correct principles to boost your flute technique, which forms the building blocks of everything you play.
- 50 min Flute Enrichment Class
- Students will have exposure to various topics in the flute world that will improve the quality of their playing and performance.
- 50 min Flute Choir Class
- Those students that attend all four days of MWFF will participate in a Flute Choir class. Students will be assigned a flute choir part based off of their ability level demonstrated on the 1-minute audition video submitted at registration. All Flute Choir participants will receive their flute choir parts 2 weeks before MWFF begins. Students should prepare their parts (learning all notes, rhythms, dynamics, and tempos) before coming to this class for rehearsal. Pieces learned in this class will be presented on the final concert for family and friends. Some students will have the opportunity to play piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute in these classes.
- 50 min Full Group Class or Presentation
- From large group warm-ups to recitals, students will come together daily to enjoy playing and learning about the flute together.
