UFA 2023 Flute Convention

We are thrilled to announce that our Burkart sponsored guest artist for this year’s convention is Catherine Ransom Karoly of the Los Angeles Philharmonic! In addition, we are proud to host Ensemble 126, a versatile flute ensemble utilizing all types of flutes in synergetic sound exploration by pursuing diverse repertoire and engaging in dynamic performances.

Mock Audition and Orchestral Excerpt Masterclass

Registration for participating in the mock audition is now closed


Audition to perform in the Orchestral Excerpt Masterclass with Catherine Ransom Karoly. Registration closes March 1, 2023. Individual performance times in the mock audition will be assigned by March 5th, 2023.

The mock audition will be judged blind. Winners will be announced by 10:30am and the winner for each category will perform in the 11am Orchestral Excerpt Masterclass. Each winner will perform the assigned duo excerpt with Ms. Karoly at the end of their masterclass performance, and is welcome to record their performance.

Catherine Ransom Karoly teaches a dynamic class covering the fundamentals of flute playing and performance. For all playing levels.

Watch the three finalists for this year’s Artist Performer competition perform two movements of the Bach Partita. The winner will be announced along with all the other winners at the beginning of the final recital with Ms. Karoly.

Come learn about improvisation with some of the versatile and dynamic members of Ensemble 126. Bring your instrument and be ready to play!

Celebrate our three winners of our annual Scholarship competition. Winners were chosen in a competition in January. All winners are current highschool seniors living in Utah.

Do You Experience Droopy Flute Syndrome?  Training and Exercises that Bring Relief!

Tips on how to create the best flute tone for you!  Whether you are a beginner, or have been playing for several years, come learn how your facial muscles work together to produce a beautiful flute tone!  Help will also be given on how to play the flute with braces. Students will need their flutes for this class.

Scale Olympic Prep!   

Come learn how to prepare for the different levels of the Scale Olympics at MWFF (our 3 day convention designed for our younger students, happening this June)!  Attendees will receive a work booklet that teaches the Major Flat and Sharp Scale patterns, as well as their relative natural, harmonic, and melodic minors.  Students will need their flutes for this class. 

Ms. Karoly will be available on a limited basis for private lessons during her time in Salt Lake City. If you want to schedule a lesson with her please email, Ethan Lin at ethan@burkart.com. Lessons will be scheduled on a first come, first serve basis.

All day member: $20 (Please note if you are also participating in the Sonata Competition, that will be a separate, additional registration and payment.)

MWFF Day: $15 – This pays for entrance to the two MWFF classes and the afternoon recitals. 
Mock Audition: $35 – (registration for the mock audition is now closed) – This covers your mock audition and your day entrance fee. There is no additional fee to play in the masterclass if you are the mock audition winner selected to perform.

Lunch is available for Preorder with your registration. They are discounted thanks to a generous donation from Summerhays Music. All lunches are $5 and are nonrefundable after the sign up deadline. Lunch orders may be made until February 15th.


Featured Artists

Catherine Ransom Karoly

Catherine Ransom Karoly joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic as second flutist in May 1996. In October 2000, she made her solo debut with then Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the LA Phil in Ibert’s Flute Concerto. She was appointed Associate Principal Flute by Salonen in March 2009.

Before coming to Los Angeles, Karoly spent three seasons in Miami, Florida, as flutist in the New World Symphony under music director Michael Tilson Thomas. She appeared as soloist with the NWS on several occasions.

As a member of the award-winning Dorian Wind Quintet from 1994 to 1996, she appeared regularly on chamber music series throughout the U.S. She has participated in numerous music festivals, including Marlboro, Tanglewood, and Spoleto (Italy). She has been a featured performer at La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest since 1991. In 2014, she released an album of flute and piano music titled French Inspirations.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Karoly received a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, where she studied with Carol Wincenc. Karoly graduated from the University of Wisconsin—Madison with Phi Beta Kappa honors and was the recipient of a Fulbright Grant to study in England. Her teachers also include Trevor Wye, Mary Kay Fink, Robert Cole, and Susan Morris DeJong. Karoly has been a faculty member at the USC Thornton School of Music since 2021.

Dr. Mitchell Giambalvo moved to Salt Lake City on a whim right before the pandemic. Originally from Pennsylvania, he received his doctorate from Florida State University in piano performance. He went back to complete a second Masters degree in collaborative piano before teaching piano at Troy University in Alabama. After moving to SLC in 2019, Giambalvo is highly active in collaborating. On staff at the University of Utah where he is a vocal diction coach for singers and works with instrumentalists, Giambalvo is also a pianist with the Utah Symphony, works with faculty at UVU, BYU,  and U of U, as well as performs on the NOVA Chamber Series. 

Alan Berquist is flute faculty at California State University, Stanislaus. He performs with Ensemble 126, Etesian Duo, Bay Area Rainbow Symphony, and studies Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Winner of two NFA competitions. DM, BM, Florida State Univ.; Certificate, Carnegie Mellon Univ.; MM, Univ. of WI.

Arturo “Artie” Rodriguez is a Bay Area based Chicano Flutist, Composer, and Music Educator. He currently serves as an artist faculty with the Young Musicians Choral Orchestra. He regularly performs with Etesian Duo, Ensemble 126, Bay Area Rainbow Symphony, San Francisco Philharmonic Orchestra, and serves as Ambassador for the Awesome Orchestra Collective. BM, University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music. 

Crisha Joyner is a performer, arranger, and teacher. She has performed with the Florida Flute Orchestra, Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, among others. She holds a BA from Central Washington Univ., MM from Bowling Green State Univ. and is pursuing a DM at Florida State Univ. in flute performance.

Haiyang Wang is a music performer and educator. He performs with Ensemble 126 and maintains a large music studio in Southern California. He also works with Pacific Symphony as their Youth Ensemble Audition & Operation Coordinator. MM, Florida State Univ.; BM, Univ of North Texas.

Julia Evers is a music educator and performer. She holds a master’s degree from Florida State University in Performance and a Bachelor’s in Music Education from Baylor University. She is the social media manager and member of Ensemble 126. She often performs at national and state events and conferences. 

Vivianne Asturizaga graduated from the Natl. Conservatory in Bolivia and served as flutist of the Natl. Symphony. She obtained masters in Flute performance under Eva Amsler, Arts Administration, ethnomusicology and linguistics at FSU, where she now studies for her PhD in Musicology and plays with Ensemble 126. 

Adrienne Tedjamulia Read is Visiting Assistant Professor of Flute at Florida State University and co-directs Ensemble 126. She plays with Tallahassee Symphony and frequently subs with orchestras in the surrounding area. Adrienne received degrees from Snow College & Brigham Young University and is pursuing a DM at Florida State University.
