Sonata Competition
Solo repertoire, cash prizes, and adjudicated feedback across eleven levels — held at the University of Utah in connection with the annual Utah Flute Convention.
Prepare and present solo repertoire.
The Sonata Competition gives flutists from Utah and Idaho an opportunity to prepare and perform solo repertoire, compete for cash prizes, and receive expert feedback. Eleven levels — from K–3 through Artist Performer, including an Orchestral Mock Audition — mean there is a place for students, adult amateurs, collegiate flutists, and professionals alike.
The 2026–27 season draws its repertoire from French music, with an optional sight-reading round at every standard level.

The Sonata Competition is built around solo performance, for flutists who want to prepare and present repertoire in a supportive, adjudicated setting. The competition is open to flutists from Utah and Idaho, and entrants register within the level that matches their grade or experience — from K–3 through Artist Performer.
A current, active UFA membership is required to enter any UFA competition. The Artist Performer level has its own eligibility requirements, listed in the Artist Performer section below.

The Sonata Competition falls the day before the Utah Flute Convention, also at the University of Utah.

Artist Performer
The Artist Performer level features exceptional professional flutists competing for a $500 cash prize. A preliminary recorded round — an unedited, unlisted, audio-only YouTube recording of the pre-screening piece — determines the finalists, who then perform live at the Utah Flute Convention, where the winner is announced.
Finalists perform all three published live-round works. The pre-screening recording is due Saturday, January 23, 2027, at 11:59 PM. Sight-reading is not offered at this level.

Eligibility: open to flutists who have completed at least one music degree (major or minor) and reside in Utah or Idaho, or who completed at least one music degree (major or minor) at a Utah or Idaho college or university.
Orchestral Mock Audition
Entrants receive an assigned audition time in advance and a private practice room in which to prepare directly before their slot. A runner escorts each participant from the practice room to the stage, just as at a professional audition.
On stage, participants perform the required excerpts before a blind panel. A personnel manager is present should a participant wish to ask a question or make a comment — so their identity is never disclosed to the panel.
Once the panel has heard every participant, the winner is announced and receives a $150 cash prize. Sight-reading is not offered at this level.

Sight-reading is an optional round offered at each of the nine standard levels — opt in when you register. It is not offered for Artist Performer or the Orchestral Mock Audition. Each level’s sight-reading winner receives a certificate; there is no additional cash prize for this component.
How to enter
Every UFA competition requires a current, active UFA membership. If you’re not yet a member — or your membership has lapsed — you can join or renew UFA first, then continue to competition registration. Registration for the 2026–27 season opens September 1, 2026 and closes Saturday, February 13, 2027.
