Under the vision of Nicole Elkins, former UFA President, and the direction of Katrina Young, the creation of a summer music festival for flute students in Grades 1-12 began in Utah!  Held at the beautiful Waterford School of Performing Arts in Sandy, Utah, students participate in classes over four days that teach flutes skills, musicianship, and performance technique.  Classes are taught by a variety of professional flutists and teachers in the Western United States as well as a featured Guest Artist.

MountainWest FluteFest celebrates all levels of musicianship and aims to help students learn and grow from where they are. Each student enrolled will be placed in classes according to age level and the grade they will be entering in the Fall of 2023, not by ability.  MWFF offers the following tracks:  Grades 1-3, and Grades 4-12.

Flute Olympics

A Student favorite of MWFF!  Students prepare prior to MWFF by learning scales in their scale level based off of ability.  At MWFF, they pass off scales to a Flute Expert to earn a Gold Medal!  Students participate in various Olympic Stations with breathing games, long tone races, and even Flute Case Wrestling!  See ‘Flute Olympics’ tab for more information on how to prepare for this event!

Flute Olympic Rules

Before MWFF begins, choose your scale level and prepare as many steps within that level that you desire.  (You do not have to learn every step within your level to participate.)  You will pass off what you know to a Flute Scale Expert at MWFF.  A “GOLD” medal will be presented to those that pass off ALL the steps within their level.  A Special award will be given to the student that can play the longest long tone at MWFF!

Level Challenges

Haynes Flutes

Ryan Richman and Summerhays Music are bringing Haynes flutes for students at MWFF to try out on Saturday, June 24th.  Not only will you be able to hear Dr. Erika Boysen perform on her Haynes flute as a Haynes artist, you can see what you sound like on a Haynes!

Full Festival participants receive a MWFF T-shirt to wear on Saturday.  Students are encouraged to bring a Sharpie marker to sign each others T-shirts as well as faculty members.  Students wear the T-shirts for the final Flute Choir Concert. In addition to the t-shirts, Full Festival participants receive a MWFF Swag bag at check-in full of goodies from MWFF sponsors.
